Give an example of an energy transformation. @hilbertboy96 @DanJS @eric_d

OpenStudy (anonymous):

think of ball at the top of hill not moving at first. What kind of energy does it have?

OpenStudy (danjs):

The burning of a log.

OpenStudy (danjs):

a steam turbine

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you explain the burning of a log

OpenStudy (danjs):

a pendulum

OpenStudy (danjs):

Chemical energy to heat energy/kinetic enrgy of the molecules

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the burning of a log is potential energy from the log becoming thermal energy as the fire burns

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i get it thanks guys! you guys are very helpful and understanding! :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Give an example of heat transfer by convection.

OpenStudy (danjs):

an oven

OpenStudy (anonymous):

microwave as well if i am correct

OpenStudy (danjs):

microwave is radiation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea my bad lol

OpenStudy (danjs):

Convection currents in the ocean, warm water flows towards colder waters

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is that an example?

OpenStudy (danjs):

yeh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and it explains everything too?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you explain it a little better @ danJS

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@DanJS

OpenStudy (danjs):

Convection is like the diffusion of heat

OpenStudy (danjs):

The hot water diffuses into the colder water , warming it up

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how can i put that in an answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

like give e a complete example

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@DanJS

OpenStudy (danjs):

Convection is the movement of heat energy from one place to another by the movement of fluids. Essentially it is a movement of heat by mass transfer. Convection is usually used to describe the effects of heat conduction within a fluid, also called diffusion.

OpenStudy (danjs):

That is what the ocean and the atmosphere do

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok now can you give me an example of heat transfer by convection and explain it please. It can be any example. Thank you so much! :) @DanJS

OpenStudy (danjs):

that is what i just said

OpenStudy (anonymous):

whats the example though?

OpenStudy (danjs):

the flow of heat in the oceans and the atmosphere, because of the paragraph above.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you soooo much! you helped me a lot :)

OpenStudy (danjs):

or

OpenStudy (danjs):

thermal convection from a human hand to the surrounding still atmosphere. Like in those thermal imaging cameras you can see the color change where heat is moving

OpenStudy (danjs):

Or those ripples in the atmosphere close to a hot pavement road, that is from convection currents distorting the light
