Compare the data for the growth of two plant samples. How can you determine which data set is linear? A) Sample B has linear data because it increases as a slower rate. B) Sample A has linear data because it has a constant rate of change. C) Neither sample has linear data because the samples start at different heights. D) Both samples have linear data because as x increases, y increases.

@borak

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you know that the linear have constant rate of change or slope

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you know to claclaute the slope if given 2 points;

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you know how to calcuate the slope ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nope

OpenStudy (anonymous):

to calcaute the slope if given 2 points simple :- (x1,y1) and (x2,y2) ; (y1-y2)/(x1-x2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

take 2 points from Table A ; take 2 point from table b ; caclaute slope forr each one , write it;

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you choose 2 points from Table A and write the solpe

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you know what slope mean ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it's the rate of change of y depending of x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how to calcualte the slope ? \[\Delta{y}/\Delta{x}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you know how to get 2 points from Table A ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x = time and y = height

OpenStudy (anonymous):

give me point from table A

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(2,12)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

another one

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(5,30)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how to find the slope :- delta{y}/delta{x}

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(y1-y2)/(x1-x2) : you know to make this step ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5-3/30-12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this opposite (30-12)/(5-3) = 18/2 =6;

OpenStudy (anonymous):

slope of this function is 6;

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what we said above that the linear function have !!!!!!! CONSTANT SLOPE !!!! then if we take another 2 point It will still 6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you can try another 2 points from TABLE A and see 6 the answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(4,24) (3,18) so 24-18/4-3=6/1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea this right; which mean the function in Table A is linear

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you wirte two point from table b and check the slope ? write the answer here ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(5,26) (3,10) so 26-10/5-3=16/2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the slope in this point is 16/2;

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you calcualte another 2 points ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(4,17) (2,5) so `17-5/4-5=12/-1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(17-5)/(4-2) = 6;

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you see that slope in each point is diffrent which mean that it is not a linear

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because we say the linear is give for every 2 points A CONSTANT SLOPE

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you know can solve the question

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this is to much I am done thxs for all the help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the right answer is B ; just for more d

OpenStudy (anonymous):

linear function is have constant rate of change :- for example 3x-4 or 5x-3 or else ,.... x with power 1;

OpenStudy (anonymous):

we find that A have always 6 as value of slope when we choose any 2 points and make delta{y}/delta{x}

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this mean that Sample A descripe linear progress or linear function BUT b dont descripte linear becuase when we choose 2 points the slope 8 and another 2 points the slope equal to 6 this mean that B not linear
