what is the primary purpose for the receptor proteins located within the cell

Receptors are ways the cell to communicate with the extracellular. For example: Aldosterone (steroid hormone) binds to a receptor INSIDE of the cell that acts on the DNA on a transcriptional level to either make more/less mRNA that affects protein synthesis.
