They have shed old identities, taken new ones, and learned to hide scars. They may sell newspapers and clean your offices at night.

Let's look at each answer. In the first answer, there doesn't seem to be much implication that the author "cares deeply" for them, but let's look at the others too.
We can find evidence for answer B where she says, "They may sell newspapers and clean your offices at night." This shows that the immigrants most often had to take on some of the most undesirable jobs!
In answer C, we can see by the quote, "They have shed old identities, taken on new ones..." that the immigrants had to change who they were, and become somebody else.
