Ms. Herrera signed a contract stating that her salary for the first year will be $37,800. The contract also stated that she will receive a raise of $750/year each year after that. After how many years will Ms. Herrera’s salary first be $60,000 or more?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Edit: After how many years will Ms. Herrera's salary first be $60,000 or more?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay first thing you need to do is write an equation do u have any idea what that might b?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay so you know that youre trying to find out 60,000 right? Because thats the ending salary or at least the only one you care about lol. So what ever you have for the equation its going to equal 60,000. so it will be whatever equation=60,000

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now lets try to figure out the equation part

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so they give you a starting salary and they tell u that every yr it will be +750

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, so what would the equation look like? 37,800(x)+750=60,000?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

my first answer was 29 but I'm not sure if its correct tbh lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so theres the obvious long way of doing things where you could take 37800 (starting salary) and see how many times you add 750. The number of times you would add 750 would be the number of yrs. now that would take forever so instead were doing an equation. As for your equation you got it mixed up.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the equation would be 378000+750x=60,000

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol! that's i did at first. I just used a caculator and added $750 and wounded up 29 times with $60,000 something, but I don't know if that's correct.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay so how do we find x in this equation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

first thing you do is you try to get x alone.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in order to do that you need to get rid of the 37800

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so we're left with 750x=60000 wow this seems easy! lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and what you do to one side you do to the other.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it would be 750x=22,200 you have to subtract the 37800 from both sides

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do u know what to do know

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oooh! okay so after we subtract... uh let me write this down real quick

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay, thank you so far by the way! now what is left?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay so now you need to get rid of the 750. the goal is to get x alone. when your getting rid of something you always do the oppisite so its 750x its 750 times x. The oppisite of multipling is...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the opposite of multiplying is division, yup.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so now we're dividing what by what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well youre getting rid of the 750 so youer dividing it by 750x. because when u do thst the 750 cancels out. now dont forget what you do to one side you must do to the other

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so you also dividing what by 750

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh okay, yeah, you're right, you're right! sorry

OpenStudy (anonymous):

29 years, lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you. i appreciate the help @ispike

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what do you have on your paper right now?
