I need help ASAP, can someone please help me? Heres the question: Determine which relation is a function. A. {(–5, 1), (–5, 0), (–2, 1), (–1, 4), (6, 2)} B. {(–5, 1), (–2, 0), (–2, 2), (3, 4), (6, 2)} C. {(–5, 1), (–2, 0), (–1, 1), (2, 4), (6, 3)} D. {(–5, 3), (–2, 0), (–1, 2), (6, 4), (6, 3)}

@radar Can you help?

@campbell_st Could you please help?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hi there! To determine which of these is a function, you simply look at all of the x values (the numbers that come first) in each coordinate pair (IE 3,2 the 3 is the x value). In each of the answer choices, look for the answer that does not have a repeating x value. For example: 3,6 , 4,7 , 5,9 , 5,8 is NOT a function because 5 occurs twice in the x values. 4,6 , 7,8 , 9,0 , 6,4 IS a function because there is not a repeating x value. Now, can you figure out which one is the function.

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

look for the one where each x maps to a unique y. you can't have x going to 2 y values

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But, which one is the X values?..Gaah this is confusing

Let's look at option A: {(–5, 1), (–5, 0), (–2, 1), (–1, 4), (6, 2)} -5, -5, -2, -1, and 6 are all x values simply because in each pair of numbers they appear first. Now, based on what I said earlier (no repeating x values in a function), do you think this is a function?

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

x is 1st in each ordered pair (x, y) is always the case

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Perywerry120 Does it make sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, i think it might be C

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think so, Because Therre isn't more than one number of ex, IE -5, 1 -5,3 2,4 ect.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes! You're right. I'll explain it. Here are the numbers given for choice C: {(–5, 1), (–2, 0), (–1, 1), (2, 4), (6, 3)} In (-5, 1) 5 is the x value because it comes before the comma. In (-2,0) -2 is the x value because it comes before the comma. If you keep looking at the numbers before the comma, those are the x values. If they do not repeat, it is a function. Like option C.
