i know archeaology uses grids to plot thier finginds with .. that may have been in your movie.

not really :)  but assuming youve watched it, then thats an idea that I would propose.

when archs make a dig and find stuff, they have to be able to make a record of where they found it, so they make a grid that looks like a graph and plot their findings on it.
