Born in Canada, James Naismith’s (1861–1939) pioneering work with basketball has not made him a household name. But the sport he invented is more popular than ever. Always active in athletics and team sports, Naismith created the game of basketball to emphasize athletic skill while shifting the focus away from the rough play of other popular games such as football and rugby. Naismith intermixed rules, techniques, and strategies from both popular sports and games he had played as a child to create a unique game that has stood the test of time.
