When 40 is added to the number of miles Karen ran last week, the result is the same as adding 10 to 4 times the number of miles she ran last week. How many miles did Karen run last week?

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

if x i the number of miles she ran last week then x + 40 is one side of the equation can you work out what the other side is?

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

4x + ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

40?

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

no - look at the second part of the equation again

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

" question

OpenStudy (anonymous):

14

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

no - its states that a number is add to 4x what is that number?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

10

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

right;- so its 4x + 10 4x and 10 are not like terms so you cant simplify 4x + 10 any further. 4x + 10 is not 14. You can simplify 4 + 10 but not 4x + 10

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

so the equation is x + 40 = 4x + 10 now you need to solve this for x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x=10
