The first step in an indirect proof is to assume temporarily that what you are asked to prove is not true. Then, you work from that to use established theorems and definitions to arrive at a contradiction of the temporarily assumption. The concept is that a statement is true or false. If you assume the opposite of what you want to prove and reach a contradiction, then the assumption is false and the statement is true. This can be confusing.
