Harold goes to the post office to mail a package. The postal worker puts it on the scale and declares its weight as 23 pounds. If the spring constant of the postal scale is 810 N/m, by how much is the string compressed?

OpenStudy (shamim):

Required formula is F=kx

OpenStudy (shamim):

R u familiar with this formula

OpenStudy (mrnood):

Strictly speaking 'pounds' is a measurement of mass, not of weight. The value measured on a spring balance is the weight (= mg) The actual unit is lbf or poundals. You may need this - because the spring constant in in N which IS a force so be careful with the conversion

OpenStudy (danjs):

yeah, use lbm and lbf , makes it easier, least for me

OpenStudy (danjs):

This is just a straight forward 2 force vector balancing system
