Jasper earns his living baking Uncle Isaac’s shortbread cookies. Over the course of a month, he averages baking 105 dozen cookies each day. On any 1 given day he may fall as much as 20% below his average, while on any other given day he may produce as much as 15% above his average. Not knowing what kind of day today is for Jasper, which of the following correctly represents the range for c, the number of dozens of cookies Jasper will make today? F. 84 ≤ c ≤ 105 G. 105 ≤ c ≤ 120.75 H. 80 ≤ c ≤ 115 J. 84 ≤ c ≤ 120.75 @AriPotta

OpenStudy (aripotta):

so find 20% of 105, and subtract it from 105. then find 15% of 105, and add it to 105. then you'll have your min. and max. values

OpenStudy (aripotta):

so we know that 20% = 0.2. so multiplying .2 and 105 will give you 20% of 105

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It gives me 21.

OpenStudy (aripotta):

yep, so your answer will have 21 as the least value, so we can automatically eliminate choices G and H

OpenStudy (aripotta):

lol whoops. 105 - 21 = 84, that's what i was going for

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok. And for 15% of 105 I got 15.75

OpenStudy (aripotta):

so 84 is your least value, sorry

OpenStudy (aripotta):

so add 15.75 to 105 and that'll be your max value

OpenStudy (anonymous):

120.75

OpenStudy (aripotta):

right, so he'll make at least 84 and at most 120.75, which is answer choice J

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks for walking me through it instead of just giving me the answer. :)

OpenStudy (aripotta):

an easier way to find 20% less of a number, like we did with 105, is to realize that 20% less is actually 80% total. so 0.8 times 105 = 84

OpenStudy (aripotta):

same thing with 15% more. 15% more is the same as 115% so 1.15 times 105 = 120.75

OpenStudy (aripotta):

it just eliminates an unnecessary step ;)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

System of Elimination it sounds like.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok this has nothing to do with this problem, but how good is season 4 of AHS so far? :o

OpenStudy (aripotta):

lol, it's ok. definitely not as great as the first season

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The 1st was the best lol Evan Peters. <3
