How do the media affect government? Elected officials count on the media for financial support. Elected officials use the media to communicate with the American people. Elected officials use the media to spread their messages to interest groups. Elected officials count on the media to tell them how well they are doing.
It let them communicate from far distances.
All those are true. I wouldn't necessarily say that elected officials "count on" the media for financial support, but 1. large news outlets (or their parent companies) have been known to donate to political campaigns, and 2. candidates/officials do rely on social media, ads, and other types of media to fundraise. The media also helps to keep government accountable and transparent. Officials know that news media scrutinizes every action they take to be sure they are complying with laws, regulations, and ethics.
