if you roll a dice, what is the probability that a three will appear on top? explain.
When you toss a single cubical die, there are 6 possible outcomes, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6
There are six sides on a dice..you're looking for the probability for a three, which is one side.
The definition of probability is the number of favorable outcomes divided by the number of possible outcomes.
To roll a 3 is the favorable outcome, There are 6 possible outcomes
well if there is a number of 5 then idk how to really make it even
P(3) = 1/6
^^^^^^^^^^^
The probability for it to land on any is 1/6..
1 because there is one favorable outcome
^^^ Meaning there is only one '3' on the dice.
You don't put 3/6 as the probability because there are not 3 ways to get a 3 in exactly one toss.
but there arent 6 numbers it ends at 5
Let me read the question again. I didn't see anything about a 5. Now, if we're talking odds in favor of tossing a 3, then a 5 may be involved.
>>s it ends at 5 @mcnabkt What ends in 5? I don't get that. Unless your answer ops are decimals.
yeah but it said on a dice which only goes from 1-5
Look at what you wrote: if you roll a dice, what is the probability that a three will appear on top? explain. No mention of a 5-sided die and the default die is a cubical one of 6 faces.
I wrote this right off the bat >>>>>> When you toss a single cubical die, there are 6 possible outcomes, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6
but a dice doesnt have 6 numbers that is what im saying
Let's do this. You re-post the question EXACTLY as it appears in your book.
yeah and this is the question.

i thought a dice only had 5 sides?
So, you are not going to post the question as it appears in the book? I just want to be certain that we are both doing the same problem.
oh there is 6 sides
There exist five-faced die, but unless the problem specifies that, then the default assumption is the cubical die. A cube has six faces.
Those spots (dots, indentions) on one face of a die are called "pips."
okay
And, a cool tip. The number of dots on opposite faces sum to 7. Let me check to be sure but that is another cool fact.
\(\bf cool\)
Cubical Dice Image Below
A dice is a cube..all cubes have 6 sides..
@mcnabkt Is this explanation clear? Because if you are about to do a unit on probability, it is good that we clear the confusion, and I don't mind going through it again.
@greenlegodude57 I seriously like you reinforcement of the central concepts. Maybe we should work as a team.
Lol, I doubt I know nearly as much as you do.
all is being said, is how many faces a cube has, not anything of how i tell the probability of getting a certain number if i roll it.
The cubical die has 6 faces of equal area. When you toss it, you can get a 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6. Those numbers of dots are on the faces.
You are just as likely to get a 1 as you are a 2 as you are a 3 as you are a 4 as you are a 5 as you are a 6. That is called equally likely.
Toss the die. You want a "3" to come up. That means that the die lands with the upper face showing a 3.
Of the six possible outcomes of one toss of the cubical die, only one of them is a THREE.
That THREE is known in probabilty (study of chance) as the desired outcome or the favorable outcome as I call it.
The definition of probability is the fraction with numerator being the number of ways to get the favorable outcome divided by the number of possible outcomes.
There are 6 possible outcomes you could get on the one toss. P(3) = (favorable outcomes)/(possible outcomes) = 1/6 .
@mcnabkt Bookmark this page or print out this thread so that after you rest up a bit, you can come back and read over it again.
There's a die tossing website somewhere on the Web. We should go there and throw a few.
Question?
nope. im done with this. i dont care
im having stress and no one can give me the answer then explain how i got it that is how i can understand it.
When I am torqued out, I cannot hear what anybody says. So, after you rest up and get some distance from this stuff, come back and we'll discuss it again. I'm going to try to find that site with the virtual die toss. I'm a visual learner so if you are, that would help.
yeah i am
