Which of the following correctly uses absolute value to show the distance between –70 and 13? |–70 – 13| = |–83| = –83 units |–70 – 13| = |–83| = 83 units |–70 + 13| = |–57| = 57 units |–70 + 13| = |–57| = –57 units

@Michele_Laino @texaschic101

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Any idea?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh... c?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

? i dont understand

OpenStudy (anonymous):

d?

OpenStudy (michele_laino):

d is not possible, because an absolute value has to be always positive!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

When you're dealing with absolute values if you have a negative number it makes it positive and positive just stay positive.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so then it could be b or c...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, what @Michele_Laino said :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Right!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so then which one?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but which one would it be?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think b?

OpenStudy (michele_laino):

please note my drawing above!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

c

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh yes, it's asking for distance, look at michele's drawing!

OpenStudy (michele_laino):

|dw:1419369366560:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what is y?

OpenStudy (michele_laino):

y is -70

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so then its -70 - 13 = -83

OpenStudy (michele_laino):

that's right!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, but remember it's in absolute value so it turns into a positive.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh so then its b

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yup!

OpenStudy (michele_laino):

perfect!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

WOW.... that was A LOT of work :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thx :)

OpenStudy (michele_laino):

thanks! :)
