\[\gamma + \gamma = e^- + e^+\] The pair production can only occur if the gamma rays have twice the rest energy of an electron. The energy can be converted to mass by E=mc^2. The energy must be enough to create the mass of an electron and a positron. \[E = m _{e}*c^2\] = 0.511 MeV x 2 = 1.022 MeV

OpenStudy (danjs):

If an electron is created, by the conservation of electric charge, the opposite charge must be created, the anti-electron, positron.
