At the local sandwich shop, employees earn double time for any hours worked in addition to their regular 40-hour week. Last week, Cooper Jones worked his regular 40 hours plus 9 hours of overtime. Cooper is paid $8.50 per hour. What is his total pay for the week? okay i tried doing this and got a crazy number

OpenStudy (aaronandyson):

what did you get?

OpenStudy (aaronandyson):

show the working too we may find any flaws in it if there are any

OpenStudy (aaronandyson):

shall use a diff method to explain this to you?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i did 40 x 9 thats where i went wrong?

OpenStudy (aaronandyson):

so see he worked 40 hours plus 9 hr so 49 1 hr pay is 8.50 so multiply 49*8.50

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Senior :p

OpenStudy (aaronandyson):

lol, i just explained the sum to him

OpenStudy (anonymous):

to who ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im a girl :p

OpenStudy (aaronandyson):

to you

OpenStudy (aaronandyson):

the answer is 416.5

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

It's nine hours of overtime guys.... that's time and a half....

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

can we restart this please with accuracy

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Hint: The extra 9 hours get double time, i.e. the rate is doubled to $17/hour.

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

Sorry, overtime is double as seen above

OpenStudy (aaronandyson):

so it would be 49*17?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait im confused ? explain please

OpenStudy (aaronandyson):

ok wait

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why would it be 17?

OpenStudy (mathmate):

@AaronAndyson Only the extra 9 hours get double time. The first 40 hours get paid at $8.50.

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

Ok so let's start here, @Notgoodinmath if you worked 4 hours at 8$/hr, hhow much would you have made?

OpenStudy (aaronandyson):

regular work is 40 hr plus 9 extra so total hrs of work is 49 normal pay per hr is 8.50 but fot overtime it gets double so its 40 + 9 * 17 49*17 so its 833

OpenStudy (anonymous):

40 x 8.50 is 340

OpenStudy (aaronandyson):

but not sure for the answer

OpenStudy (mathmate):

@Notgoodinmath Pray continue!

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

So not good, yes, that is how you figure out the first part, so now, you need to know how much money per hour the poerson makes in overtime

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

40 * 8.50 = 340 9 * (8.50 * 2) = 9 * 17 = 153 153 + 340 = 493 pay including overtime

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why muliply 2?

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

Please, I have no problem teaching you how to do this on your own. If you could just work with me

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

I ask again, we just need to find out how much money they make in overtime

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its 9 overtime?

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

because employees earn double time...so instead of earning 8.50 per hr, overtime hr pay is 8.50 * 2, which is 17 per hr for overtime hrs

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

@texaschic101 please read http://openstudy.com/code-of-conduct

OpenStudy (aaronandyson):

hello, There are too many people trying explain let only one explain.

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

I am familiar with the rules...give her a break, its Christmas eve day

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh yeah merry Christmas (:

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but i need explaining and working through cause then i forget

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

So that is where the misconception is @Notgoodinmath, "At the local sandwich shop, employees \(\color\red{earn ~double~ time ~for~ any ~hours ~worked~ in~ addition ~to ~their ~regular ~40-hour ~week.}\) Last week, Cooper Jones worked his regular 40 hours plus 9 hours of overtime. Cooper is paid $8.50 per hour. What is his total pay for the week? okay i tried doing this and got a crazy number "

OpenStudy (aaronandyson):

if you need any help just tag me notgoodinmath

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so i wasnt suppossed to x 9?

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

So, now, can you interplret "double time"? And no, not times nine yet

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

40 hrs is a regular work week...anything over 40 hrs is overtime. So his regular pay is 40 * 8.50. Now he has 9 hrs overtime and since they get paid double for overtime hrs, he gets paid (8.50 x 2) which is 17 per overtime hrs. So you would multiply 9 x 17 to get overtime pay. You would then add them together to get total pay

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

You need to know how much the person makes when they work overtime, just like before

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

Before, you knew their base pay, which as you calculated correctly, you just multiply the pay rate by the number of hours worked. At the current moment, you do not know the overtime pay rate, so we need to figure that out

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im sorry i need to go to a class. ill be back in 40 mins

OpenStudy (aaronandyson):

okay , no problem

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

You have class on December 24th? Wow, I'm a little shocked, which country are you in?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

U.S its online and i get no breaks which sucks so much ! :/

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

....that's insane.... high school? Cause I cannot believe a college would pull that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes high school

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

ewwy, I'm sorry

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its okay

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol but thanks for the help I asked my teacher

OpenStudy (aaronandyson):

lol

OpenStudy (aaronandyson):

wish i was schooled online
