When a substance evaporates, what happens to the mass?

The mass is still the same amount it was originally, just more spread out you could say. For example water, when a cup of water evaporates, the same amount of mass of water in that cup evaporates into the atmosphere. This is because matter can not be destroyed.

Mass is conserved in state changes (i.e when it converts from liquid to gas, solid to liquid etc) and in chemical reactions. So the mass remains same.


PS: FYI, Mass can be destroyed or converted into energy through nuclear reactions.
