Serious College level talk

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I am planning to take engineering in college. I also want to have some AP credits before I get there. Any suggestions on which AP courses I should take at high school

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

math, science APs: AP Calc, Physics and Chem.

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

if you any already electronic classes at your h.s take them too

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

mine for example, has digital logic, which i take.

OpenStudy (danjs):

I recall my first semester included; General Chemistry 1, Calculus 1, C++ Programming, Engineering Graphics, technical communications. I would recommend as many science and math courses you are able to take. Makes the first year of college much easier. If your school offers a programming class, I would take that. I didn't take any AP tests in high school, but did take 4 years of Math, 4 years of science, and a year of fortran and basic programming.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh so do you prefer that I take English 11 AP and English 12 AP ? "The general chemistry" << is it chemistry AP in high school ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you remember any Biology subject ?? Like Biology AP maybe

OpenStudy (danjs):

For the engineering degree i did, mechanical, we were not required to take any biology, I did take that in 9th grade though.

OpenStudy (danjs):

I'm not sure what the AP test for chemistry would transfer as in credits. Maybe general chem 1, depends on the school i guess.

OpenStudy (danjs):

Not sure, i never took the AP tests. We were required 4 years of English though. As far as english classes went in school, it was just that technical writing class i did.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hmm.. So you do not suggest any specific classes ?

OpenStudy (danjs):

I think the most beneficial thing, was taking calc 1 in senior year, pretty much knew the whole first semester and part of second semester calc from that class

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So no english or history class ?

OpenStudy (danjs):

well, we were required in high school to take 3 yrs of social science, world history, US history, government.... and 4 years of english

OpenStudy (danjs):

It was a college prep type school though

@amoodarya @AravindG @nincompoop @goformit100 @hartnn @Hero @IMStuck @jdoe0001 @jim_thompson5910 @kropot72 @mathmate @rational @texaschic101 @TheSmartOne @thomaster @tkhunny

OpenStudy (danjs):

I would talk to the school(s) you are interested in and see what they are looking for specifically .

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hmm.. I'm looking for more specific guidance on what AP course I should take

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I tried that but no college has a specific AP course list for engineering

OpenStudy (danjs):

for engineering, for sure if you are able and want to, take AP math, chem physics., it for sure cant hurt you

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay thnx

OpenStudy (danjs):

play around with a computer programming language, and a design program, if not in a class, for fun. Just to get used to the logic and interface. just my 2 cents worth

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol yes i'll try

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Edx has a few computer science programming classes, one of which you can learn linear algebra alongside. If you are like me, I hate English, and I wished I got that out of the way in high school. Ap Chem, Physics, Calc are really important. Even if you don't do well on the Ap tests diving into the material will let you get a head start. Also don't jump right into calculus and neglect your algebra and trig skills. Most of calculus is algebra.

Directrix (directrix):

@MaimiGirl To find a list of AP courses, look at the College Board's website for Advanced Placement Courses at this link: https://apstudent.collegeboard.org/apcourse --------------------- Want to know the AP credit policy of a particular college or university? --------------------- AP Credit Policy Search link here: https://apstudent.collegeboard.org/creditandplacement/search-credit-policies

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@lonnie455rich is ap chem given credit in colleges? And yeah I hate english. Calculus is the thing that I think i might consider

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Directrix Thank you so much!!! That is exactly what I was looking for!!! Only one thing, for engineering will they consider CHEM and MATH and PHYS ?

Directrix (directrix):

@MaimiGirl I don't know the answer to that but I think credit or requirement for those courses would depend upon the university and the precise degree sought. Over on the M.I.T. site, you can see that: MIT grants credit for a score of 5 on some College Board Advanced Placement (AP) exams (or 4 on the Calculus BC exam). No credit is given for the College Board AP Chemistry exam. For a score of 5 on both Physics C exams, ... Look at the website of the Uni you are thinking of attending. I suspect that AP policy varies depending upon the school. http://web.mit.edu/firstyear/2018/subjects/incomingcredit/ap.html

OpenStudy (anonymous):

all right. I'll check with specific colleges on that. Also do all AP courses count toward any field. If one wants to do engineering or medical, do ALL AP courses help in both ? For example if I take AP history will it count towards engineering ?
