I got it. You must set up an equation

26+x=3x-12

From there you add the like terms and etc

38=2x

x=19

you now check to see if that makes the statement true

26+19=45

19 times 3=57, which is 12 more than the sum of 26 and 19

it's negative 12 because even though it says the product of 3 and a number is 12 MORE, in the equation, it has to be -12, so that the number is bigger for 3x
