OpenStudy (sparklestaraa):

Harris has two pipes to fill his aquarium. Pipe A can fill the aquarium at the rate of 4 gallons per minute. Pipe B can fill the aquarium at the rate of 840 liters per hour. [1 gallon = 3.79 liters] Part A: Which pipe will fill the aquarium faster? Justify your answer by comparing the rates after converting to the same units. (5 points) Part B: If the total volume of the aquarium was 500 gallons and you checked on how full it was every 0.25 hours, describe appropriate scales on the x-axis and y-axis to graph the rate at which the faster pipe fills the aquarium.

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

well you know your units so convert pipe b to gallons 840 liters=approx 221.635883905 gallons <<in an hour pipe a =4 gallons a minute 60 times 4=240 gallons<<<per hour 240>221.6 gallons pipe a fills it faster.

OpenStudy (sparklestaraa):

ok thats what i got

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

as for part b. using your now conversions, make the y axis to 500. the x axis with an interval of 15 minutes<<0.25 hour

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

PIPE A: 240 gallons per hour/4>>>>=60 gallons every .25 hour

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

im sure you can round pipe b from 221.635883905 gallon to 220 gallons, or 55 gallons every 15 min<<0.25 hours

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

from there your graph should be straightfoward

OpenStudy (sparklestaraa):

so that is the x or y axis?

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

your x axis will be time, so every 15 minutes

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

y axis is gallons

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

then using your now intervals, plot the points>>

OpenStudy (sparklestaraa):

I'm confused on what an interval is @dtan5457 and do i need to say x & y for pipe a and b

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

interval is the rate per pipe

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

let me attempt to draw this

OpenStudy (sparklestaraa):

see the different thing is that i can't draw the graph? for the assignment i don't have to all i need to do is tell them. But I'm confused do i need to say X-axis and Y-axis

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

|dw:1419624282709:dw|

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

then what does your assignment ask for?

OpenStudy (sparklestaraa):

ohhh 0,15,30,45,60 thats the intervals. and it says to find for part B= Part B: If the total volume of the aquarium was 500 gallons and you checked on how full it was every 0.25 hours, describe appropriate scales on the x-axis and y-axis to graph the rate at which the faster pipe fills the aquarium.

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

well scale for x axis is definitely 15 min<<as it asks for 0.25 hours

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

for y axis it goes up to 500, so you can make up an interval that makes sense

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

considering both pipes are about 55-60 gallons every 15 minutes, they'll reach 500 in about 10 plotting points so...

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

if i was making this graph i'd make the y axis about 0,50,100,150,200 etc

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

50's

OpenStudy (sparklestaraa):

ohhhh :D so the ? doesn't call for really any intervals right??

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

intervals=scales basically

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

there isn't really much of a right answer here but reasonable ones

OpenStudy (sparklestaraa):

ohhhhhh so when i write the scales it should be like 0,50,100,150,200

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

that would work.

OpenStudy (sparklestaraa):

and the x-axis scales would be what?

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

time>>>15 min,30 min,45 min, etc

OpenStudy (sparklestaraa):

:D thankssss

OpenStudy (sparklestaraa):

so thats the answer I'm going to put Part B: Y-axis is 500 gallons. The x-axis is 15 minutes. Some appropriate scales for the y-axis is 0,50,100,150,200,250,300,350,400,450,500. The y-axis scale can be 15,30,45,60 minutes. @dtan5457

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

*the x-axis can be 15, 30, 45

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

include 0 too.

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

is a computer checking this or an actual person?

OpenStudy (sparklestaraa):

teacher so an actual person because its a place i have to type but on multiple ?'s a computer
