Math question about transformations

OpenStudy (jessicawade):

State the various transformations applied to the base function f(x)=|x| to obtain a graph of the functiong(x) = |x + 1| − 2. Horizontal shift of 1 unit to the left and a vertical shift downward of 2 units. Horizontal shift of 1 unit to the right and a vertical shift downward of 2 units. Horizontal shift of 1 unit to the right and a vertical shift upward of 2 units. Horizontal shift of 1 unit to the left and a vertical shift upward of 2 units.

OpenStudy (jessicawade):

I think it is A

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

The function has what as it's vertex?

OpenStudy (jessicawade):

1?

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

vertex =(x,y)

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

its an ordered pair

OpenStudy (jessicawade):

oh lol

OpenStudy (jessicawade):

not sure, i had notes and i was thinking its a horizontal shift to the left because its a positive number being added and a vertical shift downwards because a negative is the base

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

back sorry

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

y== |x + 1| − 2 the vertex would be in the inside number of the absolute value, change the sign, and the outside number. -1,-2 in this case

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

so yes, you are right. it is a horizontal shift of 1 unit to the left and a vertical shift downward of 2 units.

OpenStudy (jessicawade):

ok cool :)
