Yes, in normal condition aerobic respiration (the one which requires oxygen) takes place in our body. Now when someone indulges in intense workout, muscles use up all the present oxygen very quickly to perform aerobic respiration (which is the primary mode of respiration). Now when all the oxygen is used up, the cells start performing alternate pathway i.e lactic acid fermentation to produce energy as this pathway does not requires oxygen.
