If would not happen gametes were not haploid at any progeny the genetic material make double and increase binary for example in human F1: 46 chromosome F2: 92 chromosome f3: 184 chromosome and etc so in germline cells acquire miosis instead of mitosis that number of chromosomes remain Unchanged
