The local zoo is filling two water tanks for the elephant exhibit. One water tank contains 32 gal of water and is filled at a constant rate of 8 gal/h. The second water tank contains 24 gal of water and is filled at a constant rate of 4 gal/h. When will the two tanks have the same amount of water? Explain. Let x = the number of hours the tanks are filling and let y = the number of gallons in the tank.

"One water tank contains 32 gal of water and is filled at a constant rate of 8 gal/h. The second water tank contains 24 gal of water and is filled at a constant rate of 4 gal/h." Typo or something? They will never have the same amount of water at those rates ^^

OpenStudy (godlovesme):

umm not typo there was 32 gal in the first tank and 24 gal for the 2nd

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

Ok, but if the 32 gal has a rate of 8/h and the smaller one has a even smaller rate, they can never be the same.

OpenStudy (godlovesme):

a. In 2 hours, because the solution to the system is (2,16). b. They will never have the same amount of water because the solution to the system is (–2,16). It is not possible to have time be –2 hours. c. In –2 hours, because the solution to the system is (–2,16). d. They will never have the same amount of water because the solution to the system is (–2,16). It is not possible to have –2 gallons in the tanks. i got (-2,16) and i think it's B

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

Let me solve it.

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

You are right. 32+8h=24+6h 8=-2h

Thanks @dtan5457
