The main purpose is to alter the food supply. GMO foods are altered in order to scientifically modify the veg, fruit, or animal to produce more and be more abundant. This is why you might find GIANT apples in the fruit section in some stores, and if you look you might notice that the non-GMO fruit look a bit small in comparison. That is because the natural non-GMO ones are grown naturally and to their normal size.
Altering the food supply like this allows farmers and companies produce a lot more of that certain product, and this is often beneficial to the company because Genetically modified foods saves them money because it is cheaper then doing it the 'old fashion' way ,and it make them more money at the same time because people are drawn to buy the larger producer that is cheap.
