If I make a phone call from you hometown in Louisiana at 4:00pm to Tokyo, what time will it be in Tokyo? Plz explain why

OpenStudy (anonymous):

http://www.mapsofworld.com/time-zone-map/world.htm

OpenStudy (turingtest):

what time zone is Louisiana in? what time zone is Tokyo in? what is the difference between them?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The time in Louisiana is 4:00pm but I can't figure out the time in Tokyo and I can't find it on the map that my teacher gave me btw this is not a test i promise i know that that is not aloud on Open Study

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

Louisiana is in the red circle, Tokyo is in the green circle. http://prntscr.com/5n18ma

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh i didn't see that....i feel dumb now

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

\(\LARGE\cal\color{#ff0074}{No~Problem!}\\\bbox [10pt, #00ffab,border:5pt solid blue ]{\color{#872AF0}{\huge\cal ~\heartsuit sleepyjess\heartsuit}}\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hehe yea i just woke up school is a drag

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got another small question 23:00 is 4:00 right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it would be a 20 hour difference

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

I am finding a 15 hour difference

OpenStudy (anonymous):

since it is 4:00pm in lousisana it would be 4:00 am in tokyo

OpenStudy (turingtest):

is it 15 hours from 4am to 4pm?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no no i said it was 20 hours

OpenStudy (turingtest):

how did you get that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i counted from 4:00 to 4:00

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

From 4 pm to 4 am would be 12 hours

OpenStudy (turingtest):

you don't need to think about the 4pm part of the problem until after you figure out how many hours apart the time zones are. what number is the time zone that louisiana is in? what number is the time zone that tokyo is in?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

8

OpenStudy (turingtest):

i don't see an 8 around where sleepyjess circled in that screenshot

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-8

OpenStudy (turingtest):

where are you getting -8 from? there should be two numbers one for the time zone that louisiana is in one for the time zone that tokyo is in look at the screenshot sleepyjess sent

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i know but my teacher said that the time in louisiana is 4:00pm and i need to find out tokyo time and how far apart they are

OpenStudy (turingtest):

you aren't understanding the problem how far apart they are has nothing to do with what time it is *now*, just like how far it is from your house to school has nothing to do with where you are standing! forget 4pm for now. look at the chart. look at the *numbers* of the time zones (colored sections) what number is louisiana in? what number is tokyo in?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

louisana 6:00 and tokyo 20:00 which equals 8:00

OpenStudy (turingtest):

i see a -6 near louisiana, not a +6 i don't see a 20 anywhere in the picture

OpenStudy (turingtest):

are you looking at the picture? that is the only thing to look at right now

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i meant 21:00 which equals 9 and yes i am looking at the picture

OpenStudy (anonymous):

look to the right where tokyo time zone is and you will see 21:00

OpenStudy (turingtest):

oh ok, well then you can use 21:00 and 6:00 what is the difference between those times?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

16 hour difference

OpenStudy (turingtest):

not quite 21-6=?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh i was an hour off

OpenStudy (anonymous):

15 hours

OpenStudy (turingtest):

good, *now* we can figure out what time it is in tokyo when it is 4pm in louisiana any idea how to do that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

we say 21:00-4

OpenStudy (turingtest):

no, you need to use the *difference* between the two times zones, which was what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you want me to add?

OpenStudy (turingtest):

how many hours difference is there between louisiana and tokyo?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

17 hours

OpenStudy (turingtest):

no, we have already figured this out what time zone is tokyo in? what time zone is louisiana in? what is the difference between them?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

tokyo-it would be 9am there louisiana 4am

OpenStudy (turingtest):

i'm not seeing where you are getting these numbers look at the chart again

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i meant 9pm

OpenStudy (turingtest):

well yes, when it is 4am in louisiana, it is 9pm in tokyo how many hours difference is that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i say 18hours

OpenStudy (turingtest):

no, try again

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5hours

OpenStudy (turingtest):

let's see at 4am, in 1 hour it is 5am, in 2 hours it is 6am, in 3 hours it is 7am, in 4 hours it is 8am, in 5 hours it is 9am doesn't look like it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

give me second please

OpenStudy (turingtest):

of course

OpenStudy (anonymous):

btw you do know i am trying to find pm, right?

OpenStudy (turingtest):

no matter what time you are trying to find, the first step is to find the difference between the two time zones

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got 18 hours

OpenStudy (turingtest):

how many hours is it from 4am to 4pm?

OpenStudy (alexandervonhumboldt2):

12

OpenStudy (turingtest):

@AlexandervonHumboldt2 I think this is @TeenWolfGirl 's problem

OpenStudy (alexandervonhumboldt2):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got 18 hours

OpenStudy (turingtest):

how many hours is it from 4am to 4pm?

OpenStudy (turingtest):

18 hours is wrong how many hours is it from 4am to 4pm?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6

OpenStudy (alexandervonhumboldt2):

look at the clock and count

OpenStudy (turingtest):

no, what happens to the hand of a clock in 24 hours? it goes around twice, right? how many hours are on the face of a clock?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

12

OpenStudy (turingtest):

ok, so for the hour hand of a clock to go from pointing at 6 (am) to go all the way around the face of the clock and point back at 6, how long does it take?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

12

OpenStudy (turingtest):

great, so that means it is 12 hours from 6am to 6pm also it means that it is 12 hours from 4am to 4pm, and so on so it is 12 hours from 4am to 4pm, how many hours is it from 4pm to 9pm?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

21

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4pm to 9pm

OpenStudy (turingtest):

21 hours from 4pm to 9pm? really? so if it is 4pm, and I say I will see you at 9 this evening, i won't see you for 21 hours? that seems wrong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5 or 6

OpenStudy (turingtest):

ok wait these numbers are wrong look you did this before, look at either the numbers near the middle of the map, or the numbers at the bottom louisiana is in -6 tokyo is in 9 so you see that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if your going by -6 then thats probly why because it is (-)4am to 9pm

OpenStudy (turingtest):

how are you getting 4am to 9pm?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

13 hours

OpenStudy (turingtest):

where are you getting that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i am getting the one from my teacher and two from the map my teacher gives me 4am for louisiana so look for 4am or 4 over on the left which it (-4) then i find tokyo time zone look at the time which it +9 then i subtract -4-9=-13

OpenStudy (turingtest):

4am is not the same as -4 on the map -4 means that if it the time is 4 hours before whatever time it is in the middle (called the Prime "Meridian") If it is noon on the Prime Meridian, then it is 4 hours before noon (8:00am) in the -4 time zone

OpenStudy (turingtest):

forget 4am for now look at the map only what time zone is louisiana in? what time zone is tokyo in?
