they can be add and subtraced example 2x and 3x are like terms 2 and 3x are not like terms

like terms when you have number with same variables for example 2x + 2x= now you can combine this another example 2 +3 = both doesn't' have any variable so you can combine this

x^3 + x^2 <==== you cannot combine this bec they both have different exponent
