Which of the ordered pairs below satisfy the following equation? Check all that apply. y = 7x A. (42, 7) B. (84, 12) C. (42, 6) D. (6, 42) E. (84, 14) F. (12, 84)

OpenStudy (mchilds15):

Do you know how to do this? lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no lol you might have to explain this too xD

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or at least help me get on the right track

OpenStudy (anonymous):

plug in bro try C

OpenStudy (mchilds15):

Hahaha It's easy x is multiplied by 7 therefore, divide every x by 7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so then all the answers to the right are the ones to divide?

OpenStudy (mchilds15):

So when you for example divide 42 ( the x) by 7, it would equal y. SO 42 divided by 7 doesn't equal 7, so it's not A

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

y = 7x your points are set up like (x,y) so plug in your x points and your y points and see what comes out true. (42,7)....x = 42 and y = 7 now we sub y = 7x 7 = 7 * 42 I can tell you right now that this is not true. Now just do the same for all the points and see which ones are true and these are your solutions

OpenStudy (mchilds15):

It would be C because 42 divided by 7 is 6 Do you see what i mean? Sorta?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok so when you divide for example the 84/7 it came out to be 12 and its (84,12) So would that also be right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so whenever you divide it has to satisfy the equation so 84/7 has to come out 12 other wise it would be wrong right?

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

It is NOT C

OpenStudy (mchilds15):

Oh shoot, I messed up Sorry

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so was i wrong with B?

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

don't get your x's and y's mixed up

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

B is NOT a solution

OpenStudy (mchilds15):

Wait, it's D and F. They fit the equation. I apologize, I mixed up the x's and y's

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

just sub in your points (x,y) into the equation and see what comes out true. It is D and F

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok thanks so much!!

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

See... D. (6,42)...x = 6 and y = 42 now sub y = 7x 42 = 7(6) 42 = 42 (correct) therefore, it is a solution

OpenStudy (mchilds15):

Your welcome! Sorry i messed up there lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol its all good!!

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

lol...If I had $1 for every time I messed up, I would be rich. That is kinda sad to say.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Same with me... haha i'm gonna close the question now... But thanks for your help @texaschic101 and @Mchilds15

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

anytime :)
