Were there huge, popular fantasy novels before The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter series?

The Chronicles of Narnia could be considered another one. However, The Lord of the Rings pioneered the fantasy genre, essentially setting it apart as a genre. Before that, there really wasn't a fantasy genre. Also, the Harry Potter series did not come until almost fifty years later.
