Help with algebra 2 question??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (danjs):

(x+5) to the -3 power = 0.001 is another way to think about it

OpenStudy (danjs):

\[(x+5)^{-3} = 0.001\]

OpenStudy (danjs):

or \[\frac{ 1 }{ (x+5)^3 } = 0.001\]

OpenStudy (danjs):

what number to the 3rd power is 1000, because 1/1000 = 0.001

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im not sure

OpenStudy (danjs):

10 x 10 x 10 = 10^3 = 1000 right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (danjs):

1/1000 = 0.001 right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (danjs):

so make your fraction be 1/10^3

OpenStudy (danjs):

x should be (x+5)^3 = 10^3 x must be?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5 right?

OpenStudy (danjs):

yep

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks! can you help me with a few more?

OpenStudy (danjs):

here is what i think is the most important part of the prob....

OpenStudy (danjs):

\[\log_{b}a = c ~~~then~~~ b^c = a \]

OpenStudy (danjs):

that is the property, logs are just exponents

OpenStudy (danjs):

log base b of 'a' means "what power does b have to be raised to to equal 'a'"
