If two triangles have three pairs of sides in the same ratio, then the triangles are similar.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do we have to solve anything or is that it?

OpenStudy (perl):

so you need to show which sides are in ratio

OpenStudy (perl):

Using the given lengths

OpenStudy (perl):

my draw button does not work, but see if you can label the lengths

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@perl u there?

OpenStudy (perl):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3/3 = 7/14

OpenStudy (perl):

3 / (3 + 3) = 7/14 , so that checks

OpenStudy (perl):

HL = 3 + 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok give me a sec

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait am i supposed to solve that?

OpenStudy (perl):

so there are three ratios, where I am comparing side of smaller triangle to side of larger triangle. HY / HI HZ / HJ YZ / IJ if all three of these ratios are equal , the two triangles are similar

OpenStudy (perl):

HY / HI = 3 / (3 + 3 ) = 1/2 HZ / HJ = 7 / 14 = 1/2 YZ / IJ = 6/12 = 1/2 By SSS similarity postulate, the two triangles are similar http://www.mathsisfun.com/geometry/triangles-similar-finding.html

oh wow thank you so much!
