OpenStudy (anonymous):

There are a total of 45000 seats. The word problem tells you that baseball fans bought 5/8 of the 45000 seats. So we need to find out how many seats is 5/8 of 45000 and then subtract that by 45000. Key word here is "of" 5/8 "of" 45000 tells us to multiply 5/8 and 45000. So turn 5/8 into a decimal and multiply it by 45000, which 5/8 = .625 . Now take .625 and times it by 45000, which will give us 28125. Now take 28125 and subtract it from 45000 (45000 - 28125) and that will tell you how many seats are available.
