Which statements are true? Choose all answers that are correct. A. –15 + (–10) > –4 + (–20) B. –10 + (–11) > 3 + (–26) C. 17 + (–26) > 12 + (–19) D. –18 + 31 = 24 + (–11)

OpenStudy (secret-ninja):

All you have to do is sole the problems on each side of the greater than or equal signs. This is the first one: -15 + (-10) That equals -25. Do this one: -4 + (-20)

OpenStudy (secret-ninja):

-4 + (-20) is -24. -24 is less than -25, so A is true.

OpenStudy (secret-ninja):

Lets move one to B. -10 + (-11) Can you try to solve this one?

OpenStudy (secret-ninja):

@Angielovezyou I wont do all of the work... I need to know you are understanding this.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes i'm kinda getting it

OpenStudy (secret-ninja):

Okay, good! :D Try to do the first part of B. -10 + (-11) = ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Does it equal -21?

OpenStudy (secret-ninja):

Yes! It does. :)

OpenStudy (secret-ninja):

3 + (-26) Now try this one.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay I think it's +29 am I correct?

OpenStudy (secret-ninja):

Not exactly.. since 3 is a positive number, and 26 is negative, it takes 3 away from 26 and stays negative. It is actually -23. Tell me... Is -21 bigger or smaller than -23?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh okay -21 is smaller than -23

OpenStudy (secret-ninja):

Yes, it is smaller. So B is not correct. Now we can move on to C. Solve this: 17 + (-26)

OpenStudy (secret-ninja):

@Angielovezyou Are you there? We are almost done. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes I'm here I'm thinking

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got -43 am I correct?

OpenStudy (secret-ninja):

Not exactly... although I see whee you might get confused. The number 17 is positive, and 26 is negative, so you subtract 17 from 26 and keep it negative. This gives you -9. The same goes for the other one, 12 + (-19) Try to keep this in mind while solving it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh okay I see it okay I'll try to remember that next time

OpenStudy (secret-ninja):

Okay, let me know when you get it. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay I think i got it is it -7?

OpenStudy (secret-ninja):

Yes, it is! :D Now tell me, is -7 smaller then -9?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-7 is smaller than -9

OpenStudy (secret-ninja):

Yes, good job. A and C are correct. Now we only have D left. Solve this one: -18 + 31

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is it -13?

OpenStudy (secret-ninja):

No, but it is 13. Since the larger number, 31, is positive, it will stay positive. So it is just 13. :) Now we only have this one left: 24 + (-11)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh okay I think it is 13?

OpenStudy (secret-ninja):

Yes, it is also 13!, making D true. So the answers are A C and D. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay Thx for helping me Secret-Ninja :)

OpenStudy (secret-ninja):

No problem. :)
