The Songhai state developed around Gao circa 1,000. It was dominated by Mali until the 1400s when the Songhai empire emerged to become the largest Islamic Empire and the largest west African empire ever. Songhai encompassed Timbuktu, the Mali capital and land reaching the Atlantic ocean and all along the Niger River. Songhai leaders and upper class were always Islamic but allowed subjects to continue traditional religions.
