The quake destroyed much of the city and surrounding towns. The initial count was 396 dead but nobody bothered counting the dead in Chinatown. Fires burned out of control as a result of the quake and finished off the destruction. The course of the Salinas River that empties into Monterey Bay was changed. The mouth moved 6 miles from its original place.
