Two areas of northern Texas were set aside as protected freshwater marshlands in an effort to create a refuge for waterfowl. One area was located next to a large-scale cattle farm containing more than 500 head of cattle. Ten years later, conservationists noted that the marshland adjacent to the cattle farm was overrun with cattails, eliminating much of the habitat for the waterfowl. The cattail population remained small and constant in size at the other marshland. Which is a valid method for determining whether the presence of the cattle farm was an abiotic stressor on the marshland? Analyze the grazing habits of the cattle, as well as the chemical makeup of their food, to determine whether they are eating compounds that inhibit cattail growth. Count the number of cattails in each marshland and calculate the percentage of marshland occupied by the cattails. Determine whether a component of cattle waste is toxic to cattail competitors, and evaluate samples of water and soil from each marshland to determine if there is a difference. Identify the species inhabiting each marshland, looking for the presence or absence of a species that consumes cattails.
