( As the two competitors USSR and US have been competing, the US has been trying by all means to assist the Eastern part of Germany (that the USSR conquered).  )

West Germany was the free part of the country, assisted by US and other European countries, while the Eastern part was just occupied by the Soviets and nothing good was going on in it.
