How did Americans feel about the government going into the 1980s and how did that help get Reagan elected?

I think Reagan's election demonstrated the increasingly conservative mood of the American people in the wake of the liberalism of the Sixties and the disillusionment of the Seventies. Reagan won the White House by promising to get the government off the backs of the people.
