Can someone walk me through how to simplify the rational expression x^2-8x+7/x-7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

any ideas?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@brittanyandrea

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not really

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you know this material?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Somewhat

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you know where to start?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

someone gave me the answer (x-1)(x-7)/x-7 but i cant figure out how they got it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Would you start with the gcf?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea, but im pretty sure the answer u got it just a simplification, so if thats all you need than i coul walk you through that but...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

all i need to do is simplify it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok, so set X^2-8x+7 equal to 0 now all you need to do is simplify the equation, like before in algebra 1. and your answer should come out to (X-1)(X-7). then u take that equation and you divide it by (X-7)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it would be x-1?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you
