What strategy did the United States pursue for advancing to Japan?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The strategy was called "island-hopping". They would invade some islands and bypass some, with mixed results in terms of human cost. Some say that strategy saved lives, some say it cost lives. An example would be the Battle of Peleliu, the U.S. invaded Peleliu and suffered almost 2000 killed in action and over 8000 more wounded. At the time American military planners said the invasion was necessary, but later some historians and others say it was unnecessary and we should have bypassed Peleliu, we'll never know for sure.
