please help? medal and fan for the best answer :) Are the two figures below similar? Explain why or why not using complete sentences. Provide evidence to support your claims.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@poopsiedoodle

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I would say the figures are not the same. Although the one on left appears to be double as big, it would have been so were it not for the side FG and MN, which are equal in both figures...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you know what similar means?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

figures having the same shape; having corresponding sides proportional and corresponding angles equal

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Right, so with that information you can point out two things in the figures that do not fit that description.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so they do not have having corresponding sides proportional and they do not have equal corresponding angles ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@wio

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah, so how would you know that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't know

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You can use the two rightmost vertical sides.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay can you explain a little more?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

KL correspond to DE and MN correspond to FG

OpenStudy (anonymous):

For similarity we need \[ \frac{KL}{MN} = \frac{DE}{FG} \]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so how would I officially answer this question?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, find the lengths of them, and show that equation doesn't hold

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do I find the lengths?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

KL goes from 1 to 0, so it has length 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

DE goes from 1 to -1, so it has length 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

mn has a length of 1? and fg has a length of 1?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so kl/mn= 1/1 de/fg= 2/1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so how would I put this information into a proper answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@wio

OpenStudy (anonymous):

answer: they do not have having proportional corresponding sides and they do not have equal corresponding angles. we know this by finding the lengths that will show the equation wont hold. so kl/mn= 1/1 de/fg= 2/1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is this correct @wio ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah because \(1\neq 2\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay thanks for all your help
