How was transportation in the 19th century linked to the concept of Manifest Destiny?

In the Beginning of the 1800's more exploration of the United States began to take place. People began to move more out west. Manifest Destiny beckoned many people later in the 1800's (mostly struggling farmers, freed slaves, and soldiers that fought in the civil war). These people hoped to find the promise of American prosperity in the Western part of the United States.
