What is a variable term? Is x+4 a variable term?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

In mathematical terms, the dependent variable y represents the value of a function of x. To simplify formulas, it is often useful to use the same symbol for the dependent variable y and the function mapping x onto y.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So x+4 is a variable term right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think so. It has one term (being the x) so that would make it univariate. Univariate means involving one variate or variable quantity

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay. Thanks for answering :)

OpenStudy (calculusfunctions):

The variable term would be x. 4 is the constant term (term independent of x).
