2. In what ways do Roger and Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones, the main characters in Langston Hughes’s “Thank You, M’am,” show themselves to be different from what readers initially expect? What is the theme of this story? Answer this question in no fewer than two paragraphs.

Hey! I didn't read the book but I am sure you can figure this out. Try using nets, charts, and notes to help organize what you read. Ask your teacher or learning coach for help too :)

Let's see what Fluffle says though

OpenStudy (flufflepuffle):

Well I've read it and in the beginning, it looked like Mrs. Luella was a mean lady. She dragged him by his shirt collar to her house and made him wash his face. She reveals her character slowly first by letting him wash his face then by putting some trust into him when she left her purse unoccupied by anyone but him. She then reveals herself to be a kind person when she makes him dinner and gives him $10 to buy his shoes.

OpenStudy (flufflepuffle):

Now for Roger.

OpenStudy (flufflepuffle):

Roger in the beginning looked like a delinquent, trying to steal a lady's purse. When he fails he tries to run away but gets caught by Luella, once he is at her house he washes his face and worries that she will turn him in. He reveals himself to be kind hearted when he didn't run for the door and when he didn't steal anything from her purse when she left it. His final revelation as being a nice character is when he asks her if she needs anything from the store, this could've been a trick but from what I wrote up there it didn't seem likely. He then walks out the door and tries to work up the courage to say "Thank you" to Luella.

OpenStudy (flufflepuffle):

The theme of the story is that you shouldn't judge someone by the way they look, this is revealed to be the theme in 4 ways. 1. Roger underestimated Luella. 2. Roger thought Luella would turn him and didn't think she was a nice person. 3. Luella never thought anything of Roger except for the fact that he was a delinquent and turned out to be kind hearted. 4. Roger never thought Luella was nice until she made him dinner and gave him the money.

thank you i just need a little more help with it

OpenStudy (flufflepuffle):

Alright.
