please someone help! :(
@StudyGurl14
They give you the length of AB and AD, and the total length (perimeter). AB - 10m AD - 8m Perimeter: 58m You are left without knowing the lengths of sides CD and BC. BUT, you do know that the ratio of CD: BC is 2:3 *Remember: You want to find the length of GH, which is the same as CD.* First Step: You want to figure out the total length of sides CD and BC. How can you do that?
I don't know :( I don't understand ratios
The first stpe has nothing to do with ratios.
You have four sides. The TOTAL length of the four sides is 58 m. One side has a length of 10m. One side has a length of 8m. How can you find teh total length of the remaining two sides?
do you subtract the length of AB and AD from the perimeter?
Correct. ^
Tell me what you get. :)
40
Correct.
The Second Step: You can set up these two equations based on the information given in the problem. *Remember that a ratio is the same thing as a fraction* \(\Large \frac{CD}{BC}=\frac{2}{3}\) and... \(\large CD+BC=40\) Solve the system of equations.
CD = 20 and BC = 13.33333....
is that right?
No, sorry that's incorrect. Can you show me what you did to get that answer?
actually is this it? \[\frac{ 2 }{ 3 } = \frac{ 40 }{ 1 }\] then I got\[\frac{ 80 }{ 3 } = 26.666...\]
I don't know what I'm doing :(
No...that's not how you solve it.
First, you do this: \(\Large\frac{CD}{BC}=\frac{2}{3}\rightarrow\large 3CD = 2BC\) And this: \(\large CD+BC=40\rightarrow CD=40-BC\) Now try solving.
so is the equation 3CD = 40 - 2BC? don't I need to know the length of either CD or BC to solve that?
not quite. Plug in 40-BC for Cd in the first equation
\(\large 3CD=2BC\rightarrow3(40-BC)=2BC\) Solve for BC
Once you find BC, subtract that from 40 and you'll get CD (your answer)
I got 120 = -BC
but I am 100% sure that isn't right
@StudyGurl14 ?
No, that's not right, haha
almost though. the 120 part is right.
does CD = 16 and BC = 24?
Nice!
You're correct. So the answer is 16
10 + 8 + 2x + 3x = 58 18 + 5x = 58 5x = 40 x = 8 then I substituted. CD: 2x 2(8) 16 and BC: 3x 3(8) 24
that's what I did
That works too. Nice job. :) There are almost always several ways to solve these types of problems. Great job doing it your own way. It helps you remmeber it better than learning someone else's way
thanks so much for your help! :)
