Religion and politics were hand in hand. This was especially in Ancient Egypt. There was no separation of church and state. An example is that the Egyptian people believed the pharaoh to be a god (elated to RA the sun god). People would even pay sacrifices to him on occasion. Everything the pharaoh or priests would do, were directly related to religious or superstitious beliefs. The same thing practically went for Mesopotamia.
