An expression is shown below: 3x^3y + 12xy - 3x^2y - 12y Part A: Rewrite the expression so that the GCF is factored completely. Part B: Rewrite the expression completely factored. Show the steps of your work. Part C: If the two middle terms were switched so that the expression became 3x^3y - 3x^2y + 12xy - 12y, would the factored expression no longer be equivalent to your answer in part B? Explain your reasoning.

DivineSolar (divinesolar):

GCF?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I believe that the GCF would be 3y for this expression

DivineSolar (divinesolar):

Well factoring it out we would get... 3y ( x^3 + 4x - x^2 - 4 )

DivineSolar (divinesolar):

Thats for part B

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, but I do know how to factor but I am not very good at it so if you can, can you show me the work so I can better understand this?

DivineSolar (divinesolar):

Would u like a post that could help possibly or just me?

DivineSolar (divinesolar):

3x3y+12xy-3x2y-12y =9xy+12xy-6xy-12y =21xy-6xy-12y =15xy-12y =3y(5x-4) If its me here is A

DivineSolar (divinesolar):

Does this help make sense?

DivineSolar (divinesolar):

math u there?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Um sort of. I am honestly a little confused though, how did you get 9xy for the first term?

DivineSolar (divinesolar):

3x3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its 3x^3y actually

DivineSolar (divinesolar):

For C here is the answer to that, =3y(x^3+x^2+4x-4) =3y(x^2(x-1)+4(x-1)) =3y(x^2+4)(x-1)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I forgot to put in the ^ when I posted the question

DivineSolar (divinesolar):

Yep ;)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok but this is something that I am normally good at but keep forgetting. 3x^3y would be 27xy I think...

DivineSolar (divinesolar):

Well go with your gut.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Because 3^3 = 27, so I guess 3x^3y would be 27xy but I am not entirely sure

DivineSolar (divinesolar):

As i said before. Go with your gut. I want you to be happy with your answers.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Lol okay. Well here is how I am solving it right now: 3x^3y + 12xy - 3x^2y - 12y 27xy + 12xy - 9xy - 12y 39xy - 9xy - 12y 30xy - 12y

DivineSolar (divinesolar):

Looks fine to me. But 1 persons information really isnt enough, i would tag some people in here. See what they say ^-^

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hmm, okay. One min @ganeshie8 @SolomonZelman @dan815

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay I might have tagged too many people.

DivineSolar (divinesolar):

I see that.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@iambatman

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So no one is coming to my rescue. As always. -_-

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@sleepyjess

DivineSolar (divinesolar):

Im sorry...

DivineSolar (divinesolar):

That seems to be the case with me as well.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What are you sorry for? It's perfectly fine. You helped me, it's just that I need a little more help because I can't remember some things.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't know what to do with terms like 3x^3y

DivineSolar (divinesolar):

Ah. Well. I really am sorry because i really have to get back to my test XD. Im helping people while testing.

DivineSolar (divinesolar):

So far your my 2nd

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[3x ^{3}y + 12xy - 3x^2y - 12y\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you though! I really appreciate it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ill just sit ehre and try to figure it out while I wait for someone. :).

DivineSolar (divinesolar):

Sorry i cant help any further. I dont plan on getting locked out of my test anytime soon.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

here *

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Are you in flvs?

DivineSolar (divinesolar):

Why yes i am.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Could you use a logarithm ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Me too

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ooh I am too lol But actually I dont think log could work

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't even know what a logarithm is. But I will just review some videos from my lessons. I should just try to figure it out myself. But If I am really struggling, I will come back here

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks for your help @DivineSolar

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Heres a medal for you actually willing to help a stubborn person such as myself. lol. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Bye. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh you haven't learned logs yet?

DivineSolar (divinesolar):

See ya. Sorry for the luck we both have XD

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ohhh waaait, I figured it out!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

They're just trying to throw you off because they're evil. 3x^3y +12xy-3x^2y -12y Group themmm, then it will be easier to factor. (3x^3y +12xy)+(-3x^2y -12y) You factor 3x from the first and -3 from the second and it works! If you need me to work the whole thing out, lemme know
