Do tell, @Kainui ,

Nnesha (nnesha):

yeah tag him/her so then he/she can help u :)

OpenStudy (kainui):

Sure @Jhannybean so back in the day they had this fungus called ergot that causes ergotism, which is basically poisonous and hallucinogenic. The reason anyone would ever ingest it is because it lives in rye and blends in with it very well, so in making rye bread and being around it would cause you to get sick and hallucinate. It's because this wasn't well understood, some people in Massachusetts are said to have hallucinated some widows to have been doing weird things like magic, so they killed them for being witches. Nowadays you can use ergot as a synthetic precursor to creating LSD as they have very similar structures. Check it out: Ergotamine: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/7f/Ergotamine-skeletal.svg/731px-Ergotamine-skeletal.svg.png and Lysergic acid (LSD) http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/22/LSD-2D-skeletal-formula-and-3D-models.png/1920px-LSD-2D-skeletal-formula-and-3D-models.png

@Kainui Thank you so much!

OpenStudy (kainui):

Oh glad I could help! =D I just got a degree in chemistry with a focus on organic synthesis and I really enjoy learning about plants and fungi. =P

Nnesha (nnesha):

organic synthesis ?? same like organic chemistry ???

OpenStudy (kainui):

Yeah, exactly. =D I wish more people would ask organic chemistry synthesis questions but it's mostly general chemistry like what's an ion or what's an acid and base haha.

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

interesting.
