The north pole of a compass magnet points toward ______. A. magnetic south B. geographic south C. magnetic north D. geographic north

OpenStudy (abhisar):

What do you think it should be?

OpenStudy (hockeychick23):

I thought it would be magnetic north but it sounds like a trick question so i wasn't positive

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Magnetic north pole of earth is situated towards its geographical south pole and magnetic south towards geographical north.

OpenStudy (hockeychick23):

oh its geographic south? ok thanks

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Now, north pole of compass magnet will always try to align itself towards earth's magnetic south pole i.e geographic north pole....getting it?

OpenStudy (hockeychick23):

what? its the magnetic south? i thought it was the geographic south

OpenStudy (abhisar):

North pole of compass magnet will point towards Magnetic South or Geographic North.

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Opposite magnetic poles attract each other!

OpenStudy (hockeychick23):

ok, but which one of the 2 do you think would be right then? because only 1 is supposed to be right

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Well that's vague, because both of them are correct according to me. But I'll say magnetic south in that case.
